We have so much history in Riverside, from the adventures of Crescent Park to the unforgettable Shore Dinner Hall to the constant light in the dark of Riverside Congregational Church. This trip will take you back to 1881 and carry you through the 21st century in a true story of love and survival of "Riverside Church"
On February 11, 1881, the Riverside Congregational Church was organized, with a membership of eight:
Edward P. Adams, Eliza J. Adams, Elizabeth A. Manning, George A. Paull, Flora F. Paull, Mary A.H. Brigham, Adeline P. Knowlton & Ebenezer Plummer
On March 8, 1882, the Riverside Congregational Society was incorporated under the laws of Rhode Island, The charter members being the eight persons named above, and also,
Frederick A. Brigham, Almanda S. Oldridge, Samuel J. English, Levi S. Winchester, Asa B. Knowlton and Rev. L. S. Woodworth (who at that time was pastor of the Newman Congregational Church in East Providence, RI)
The name of our first church building was Union Chapel, built for summer worship by a non-denominational religious group to meet the needs of the summer residents of the time.
1950....(more to come)
1988/89 (more to come)
The stained glass windows that are hung today in the Narthex and Sanctuary were salvaged from our original church building before it was razed. They were kept in safe storage for many years and in 1989 when the new sanctuary was built, they again assumed their rightful position in our sanctuary for all to view and admire.
We Praise Thee O God. This window adorns one of the seven window in the sanctuary.
